Racing to the Ocean #6
Racing to the Ocean #6 © 1993
The inspiration for "Racing to the Ocean" series developed from walks on the Rio del Mar beach in Santa Cruz County. As the waves roll out, portions of the beach reveal intricate patterns in the sand created by rip tides. These patterns influenced the general shape of the vessels and the relief design. Broad kelp leaves were collected and used to create the texture. Upon closer inspection of the beach, small grains of sand can be seen flowing rapidly in the grooves of the pattern, as if they are "Racing to the Ocean."
